Leadership and Volunteering

The Slough and Wexham Leadership Academy continues to make a huge impact following its launch in September 2008. It is designed to help inspire students to take an active role and ownership in school & community life.

  • The Young Leaders Award keeps growing in all family primary schools providing a large number of youngsters across the family an introduction to those skills required to lead informal playground activities and take ownership of the opportunities on offer. They work alongside Positive Play trained lunchtime supervisors in all primary schools. This then leads onto further opportunities in KS3 at Ashfield School to develop those skills further and support the Lunchtime Activity initiative.
  • At KS4 all Year 10 & 11 students have the chance to take part in the Level 1 Junior Sports Leaders and Dance Leaders Award courses. These are very popular and help the school engage students in their own learning and promote activity for all. They support the Lunchtime programme and family festivals.
  • At KS5 the Level 2 Community Sports Leaders programme continues to grow with a high take up of students who are integral in the delivery of the OSH activity programme which includes events such as, the district & county primary cross-country, district sportshall athletics, family swimming gala, intra-school sport competitions & primary athletics. They completed a HSE First Aid qualification and NGB Bolt-on as part of the course.
  • Building on the success of the Level 2 this year saw the introduction of the Level 3 in Higher Sports Leader Award. They were Year 13 candidates who wished to develop their skills across the community following successful completion of the Level 2 in Year 12. They acted as senior leaders in the academy overseeing the Active Ashfield Lunchtime programme and working with a variety of community based groups throughout the year. These included time leading sessions for older people at Bluebell Nursing home, Sutton-in-Ashfield and working with people with disabilities at Fountaindale School & Willow Wood day care centre. They also ran numerous courses and festivals including a 4 week Boccia awards course at Lammas Leisure Centre alongside Carol Hallam (Ashfield DC SDO), Primary Boccia, Basketball & Multi-skills festivals. The Level 3 students completed extensive theory and practical courses including a Level 1 coaching qualification and bolt-on leadership awards.
  • The future development of leadership at Slough and wWexham will see a more cross-curricular approach, whole school active playground initiatives and links with the ADSSP Leadership academy due to start in September 2009.
