On Monday 23rd November 2009, five students from Arbour Vale School, all in year eight and nine, travelled to Newlands Girls School in Maidenhead for a sports Leadership conference regarding the 2012 London Olympics. The students themselves were chosen specifically to represent Arbour Vale School as they have been highlighted as future Sports Leaders and Sports Ambassadors. The day comprised of the students working with a variety of different schools from around the south East of England, (Over 100 pupils in total), to understand what they could do to influence future leadership schemes in their schools, linked with the Olympics and Paralympics. The students felt inspired and had the honour of meeting a Paralympian Athlete who had represented Great Britain in the 80s and 90s and had won three Paralympic Gold medals and a world record that to this day has never been beaten. The athlete in question is Tony Willis. The students, after listening to Tony Willis and working alongside the other pupils came up with a plan on how to bring the Paralympics into Arbour Vale School. The idea is to celebrate the 1000 day countdown to the Paralympics, (which is on the 3rd December) by hosting an assembly for the whole school and to hold an event which everyone will participate in. The students would then like to hold different sporting event, linked to the paralympics, every 100 days from then on to help with the schools build up to the event. This idea was suggested to the organisation running the conference, The Youth Sports Trust, and they commented on how this would be a fantastic way to celebrate the Paralympics before the event and how it would open peoples eyes to the true spirit of the Olympics. The students worked ever so hard on the day and have already set up an Olympic committee to work alongside the sports council in the school to bring the values of the Paralympics into Arbour Vale. Well done.
The New Year will see the introduction of some girls’ football teams in the area. Langley Hornets, Slough Irish and Jason Elwell's club Golden Eagles to name a few.
